Natalie's 2010 Trashfusion Submission

Our subject of fascination this week is fashion designer Natalie Simms.

We asked Natalie what her inspiration was for designing this recycled paper creation:

“For my Trash Fusion submission, I decided to explore the concept of making a very traditional garment using very non-tradition materials.  A wedding gown is a perfect example of a traditional garment that is rarely considered as a place to reduce, reuse and recycle.  It is more often than not constructed of entirely new materials and is rather wasteful considering such a dress is usually worn only once.  I chose to use a combination of recycled papers from industrial sources and water-based non-toxic Mod Podge to construct a wedding gown that pushes these societal boundaries.  My paper wedding gown features a classic two-piece strapless bustier and floor-length a-line skirt style with a twist. Being made of white and green-and-white patterned papers, it is a striking and eco-friendly conceptual take on the traditional wedding gown.”

Natalie Simms is a freelance fashion designer and sole proprietor of n.s. designs. Her designs feature unique style and modern edge from a wide range of inspirations. Simple, body-conscious silhouettes are accented with bold details and excellent quality. Natalie specializes in graphic tees, funky dresses and street wear but also produces custom creations such as bridal wear and costumes. All items are hand-made and hand-printed in downtown Toronto using socially and environmentally conscious methods and materials.

Unfortunately Natalie is on a temporary hiatus from designing and will not be entering  Ecofest Barrie’s Trashfusion contest this year. She is currently in the conceptual stage of designing  line of handbags made from reclaimed upholstery fabrics.
