The allure of eco-friendly fragrances

Leading fragrances and perfumes may remind you of flowers and nature, but their contents are not so natural. Chances are that your favorite fragrances are made up of petroleum-based, synthetic chemicals. So instead of breathing in the sweet scent of flowers you’re most likely inhaling chemicals like benzyl acetate, ethyl acetate and benzaldehyde. The use of these ingredients poses a wide range of health issues, such as allergic reactions and disruption of hormones

Beyond human health issues, and often excessive packaging, perfume and cologne production in general results in many environmental problems. One of the largest problems is that they often contain 70 to 85 percent alcohol, which comes from crude oil.

Crude oil is a petroleum-based product that is a non-renewable resource. It also has negative  environmental impacts when extracted, produced, transported and used.

Nonetheless, I know that I still love to smell good (and a bit alluring too!). Well here’s the good news. You can still do it without the environmental impact and harmful ingredients in most perfumes.

When seeking an alluring eau de parfum free of chemicals and pollutants

– Avoid petrochemicals such as benzyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and benzaldehyde

– Test the perfume on your skin before you buy to insure that you don’t get an allergic reaction from it

– Experiment with plant-based essential oils and create your own customized scent.

To avoid harmful fragrances, and their impact on the environment, check with the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic safety database before making a purchase.
