Spring into Clean

To go into a little bit more detail about the note we recently posted on facebook,  here is some information from project coordinator Annette Hines about Spring into Clean!

In 2010  over 7500kgs of waste was collected!

This was accomplished with an extremely large turnout of volunteers. There are 4 ways to get involved:

  • Student Participation Day – April 15th. (requires registration) Last year  a total of 52 schools and over 22,000 students helped clean up their schoolyards and adjacent parks or public spaces.
  • Waterfront Clean-up Day – April 16th – no registration required.
Last year we had more than 200 volunteers come and help us clean our Beautiful Lakeshore right to Heritage park!  Volunteers enjoyed and will enjoy again this year, coffee, hot chocolate and timbits donated from Tim Horton’s and at 1130am there will be a free appreciation BBQ.  We need the volunteers to come to Centennial Park at the Lion’s Pavilion between 930am and 10am and we will give them a dedicated section to clean. Again, no registration required.  This is also a wonderful opportunity for the highschool students to receive some Community Hours as well!

  • Community “Spring into Clean” Days – April 16th and 17th – requires registration.Last year there were 51 Community Groups that signed up to clean local parks and ravines.  They will receive a confirmation once they have registered and this confirmation will explain where they can come to pick up supplies (bags and gloves) that they can use for Clean-up.  Important to register their chosen area because sometimes schools have chosen this or another group has chosen.  We don’t want members to arrive only to find that the area had already been cleaned.

  • Corporate “Spring into Clean Days” – April 15th, 16th, 17th – registration required.
Last year there were a little more than 600 participants in the Corporate Clean-up.
Again, registration is important so that we don’t have duplicates of chosen areas.  This is an amazing challenge for our local businesses to ask their employees to participate a park, ravine or trail.  It is a great way to demonstrate team building!

BFI, the Waste Removal company that the City of Barrie uses, donates their trucks, staff and time in this wonderful project.  BFI picks up the waste from the Schools in the afternoon of April 15th.  All clean up must be completed by 1pm on April 15th.  BFI will remove the Community and Corporate waste on Monday, April 18th beginning first thing in the morning.
